Top 10 Places to Visit in Skardu: A Complete Travel Guide
October 06, 2026
Skardu is the jewel of Gilgit-Baltistan — a high-altitude valley ringed by some of the world's tallest peaks, dotted with turquoise lakes, ancient forts, and a cold desert unlike anywhere else in Pakistan. Whether you have three days or a full week, these are the places that should top your list, and how to fit them into a realistic trip.
1. Shangrila Resort & Lower Kachura Lake
The postcard image of Skardu. The heart-shaped Lower Kachura Lake, framed by the famous Shangrila Resort, is the region's most photographed spot. It's an easy drive from the city and a gentle introduction to the valley — ideal for your first day.
2. Upper Kachura Lake
A short walk beyond Shangrila lies the deeper, quieter Upper Kachura Lake. The water is strikingly clear and cold, surrounded by orchards and walking trails. Far less crowded than its lower neighbour, it's perfect for a calm afternoon and boating.
3. Katpana Cold Desert
One of the highest cold deserts in the world, Katpana's white sand dunes sit against a backdrop of snow-capped mountains — a surreal contrast you won't see anywhere else in Pakistan. Visit near sunset for the best light, and stay for the night sky if you can.
4. Deosai National Park
The "Land of Giants" is a vast high-altitude plateau of wildflowers, marmots, and the rare Himalayan brown bear. It's a bucket-list day trip or overnight adventure, but it requires a 4x4 and only opens in summer. See our full Skardu to Deosai guide for the route, fares, and timing.
5. Shigar Valley & Shigar Fort
About an hour from the city, Shigar is a lush valley famous for its 17th-century fort — now a heritage hotel — and a beautiful old wooden mosque. The drive itself, past apricot orchards and the Shigar River, is half the reward.
6. Khaplu Valley & Khaplu Palace
Further east along the Shyok River, Khaplu is a serene valley crowned by the restored Khaplu Palace, one of the finest examples of Baltistan's royal architecture. It's a longer trip from Skardu, so most travellers dedicate a full day to it.
7. Satpara Lake
On the road toward Deosai, Satpara Lake sits just south of the city — a scenic stop and the gateway to the plateau. Its calm blue water makes it a quick, worthwhile detour even if you're short on time.
8. Manthokha Waterfall
A roughly 180-foot waterfall set in a green, pine-covered pocket of the Kharmang district. It's a bit of a drive from Skardu but a refreshing, photogenic escape — popular with families and picnickers.
9. Kharpocho Fort
Perched above the city, the "King of Forts" offers the best panoramic view of Skardu, the Indus River, and the surrounding peaks. A short uphill hike gets you there — go in the late afternoon for softer light over the valley.
10. Cold Desert night skies & local bazaar
Round out your trip with two things Skardu does quietly well: some of the clearest star-filled skies in the country, and a laid-back main bazaar for Balti handicrafts, dried apricots, and gilgiti caps. Both are easy to enjoy on an evening with no fixed plan.
How many days do you need?
A quick itinerary that covers the essentials:
- Day 1: Shangrila, Lower & Upper Kachura, Katpana Cold Desert at sunset.
- Day 2: Shigar Valley and Shigar Fort.
- Day 3: Deosai National Park (full day, 4x4).
- Day 4 (optional): Khaplu Valley and Khaplu Palace.
Timing matters too — Deosai and the high routes are seasonal. Check our best time to visit Skardu guide before you lock in dates.
Getting between the sights
Skardu's attractions are spread across valleys with limited public transport, so reliable rides make or break the trip. Rather than negotiating a fresh fare at every stop, you can book transparent, pre-agreed rides — and the right vehicle for each route — through Skardu Ride. For a full rundown of your transport options, see our complete transport guide.
Spend your days on the lakes and forts, not on the roadside haggling over fares.
However long you stay, Skardu has a way of making you wish you'd booked longer. Plan your must-sees, sort your rides in advance, and let the valley do the rest.
